Chief
Justices and judges from over 50 countries took part in the
International Conclave of Jurists-2007, jointly organised by
International Council of Jurists, All India Bar Association
and the Indian Council of Jurists on December 6 2007 AT
KAMAL MAHAL, HOTEL MAURYA SHARATON, SARDAR PATEL MARG, NEW
DELHI
Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan welcomed the judges
at the conclave which was attended by Bar leaders and
academicians from different countries. The Chief Justice of
Uganda, B.J. Odoki, commended the ICJ for bringing the legal
fraternity together.
President, Haute cour de justice, Benin Clotilde M. Nougbode,
said the members of Bar associations were one family and
stressed the need to safeguard the interest of the future
generation.
Acting Chief Justice of Afghanistan Bahauddin Baha said he
was honoured to be in India. He said justice brought
security which in turn “brings prosperity for the people.”
Chief Justice of Mauritius Yeung Kam John Yeung Sik Yuen
commended the ICJ for bringing the stalwarts of law together
through this conclave.
Supreme Court Bar Association president P.H. Parekh and
special invitee M. Ravindran welcomed the judges and
delegates. ICJ president Adish C. Aggarwala applauded the
role played by the judiciary in the world for implementing
the rule of law and for protecting human rights.
ICJ organising secretary S. Prabhakaran regretted that
lawyers were being subjected to attacks in different parts
of the world. Stressing the need for strengthening the
relations between the Bar and the Bench, he said if the
relations strained, then the Bench would be isolated and
that would not augur well for the judiciary and the rule of
law.
The former Chief Justice, P.N. Bhagwati, said the judges
throughout the world were working to achieve the common
cause of justice. He said: “Judges and lawyers are servants
of the people. It is necessary for the judges throughout the
world to attain justice in order to realise the aspirations
of the people. It is the problem of the human being which is
being dealt with in the courtroom everyday.”
It was a momenyous occasion that brought the legal
fraternity from all over the world under one roof. |
